The first Emmaus was held in the Archdiocese of Miami at the Dominican Retreat House in 1978. It was developed and conducted by a team of lay women from St. Louis Church in Kendall and since then, it has spread to parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Miami, other cities, states and even internationally. The weekend is based on the scripture passage found in Luke 24:13.35, where Jesus appears to two disciples who are on the road to Emmaus, after Jesus’ resurrection.
The Women’s Emmaus ministry was started in St. Rose of Lima in 2006.
